We may be able to offer you one of two different types of treatment. The first being an application of Salicylic Acid and the second being to apply Silver Nitrate (95%) to the Verrucae and dress.

Ingrowing Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the toenail irritates and/or penetrates the skin at the side of the nail. This can lead to pain, swelling, infection, discharge, and difficulty walking and wearing enclosed shoes. Ingrown toenails are a common condition afflicting people of all ages, including children.

General treatment of ingrown toenails involves routine nail cutting to free up the nail edge, which is then cleaned with a sterile instrument and packed with lint-free swab. This method generally requires ongoing maintenance, depending on the shape of the toenail and the severity and duration of the condition.
If the skin around your toenail is red, swollen, bleeding or discharging, you may have an infection, and should seek treatment as soon as possible.

The Healthy Foot Clinic offers a full range of ingrown toenail solutions, from advice on correct nail cutting techniques to ingrowing toe nail treatments.

There are many causes of ingrown toenails, including:

Unusually curved or thickened toenails, which are often hereditary
Adolescence, during which feet tend to sweat excessively, causing the skin surrounding the toenails to soften and become easy for the nails to damage
Traumatic injury, such as a blow to the toe or toenail, can result in the nail penetrating the surrounding skin
Wearing shoes that crowd your toenails, compressing the nails into the surrounding skin
Cutting your toenails too short or tapering them in at the corners (picking at your toenails can also cause them to become ingrown)

Fungal Nail Infections

Fungal infections of both the skin and nails of the feet are caused by microscopic organisms. They exist everywhere in the atmosphere and environment. They attack human skin and nails that have experienced some trauma or damage although it can also be contracted by barefoot activity.

Fungal bacteria is an opportunist! Once it has entered the skin and/or nail it will thrive in the dark moist and warm atmosphere of the foot.

Infection of the nails is called “Onychomycosis” and is quite often a complication of what was originally an untreated or inadequately treated skin infection. This can cause the nails to thicken or become brittle, crumbly and discoloured.
At your appointment, we will carry out a full foot assessment. We use a number of different topical medications to help you treat the infection.

Products start from £12.00.

Because there are so many strains of bacteria, we cannot guarantee the products will work. You may have to treat the infection for months or even be prepared to try different products until you find one that helps eliminate the infection.

Verrucae Treatment

Verrucas are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which enters the skin through a cut, abrasion, or damaged skin. The virus thrives in damp conditions and is extremely contagious and is most likely to be caught by walking barefoot on wet surfaces or spread from person to person by direct skin contact.
Verrucas can occur anywhere on the soles and toes and often affect the weight-bearing areas. They vary in size from a few millimetres to more than one centimetre. They may be dark and brownish in colour with a rough, crumbly surface. Some have a speckled appearance with tiny black spots in them and may also be covered by a layer of hard skin.

Several may appear as a cluster at the same time and can fuse together. These are called mosaic warts. Ideally the body’s natural immune system will destroy the virus over time. However, this may take months or even years!

At your appointment we will carry out a full foot assessment. We may be able to offer you one of two different types of treatment. The first being an application of Salicylic Acid which is applied to the Verrucae and dressed. This will need to be re-applied every 2 weeks for at least three further treatments at the clinic. At the end of the three treatments we will carry out an assessment of the verrucae.

The Second option is to apply Silver Nitrate (95%) to the Verrucae and dress. The Silver Nitrate (95%) will turn brownish in colour and form a crust. We would ask you to keep the area dry and again we will need to see you every 2 weeks to re-apply for at least three further treatments.

Each re-treatment of either Salicylic Acid or Silver Nitrate (95%) price £25.00.

*Please note that because a verrucae is a virus infection there is actually no recorded medical research to prove that any method used within chiropody will eliminate the infection.  However, here at the clinic we have had many successes with both of the above treatments should you wish to try them out.
